Storing a collection for decades.

A reference guide for collectors building permanent archives — climate, layout, and the quiet rules of long-term storage.

A collection is only as old as its worst storage decade. Storage systems are the layer where small habits compound: the right shelf, the right room, the right cadence — and twenty years later the cards still look like the day they were graded.

Set the room before you set the case

Aim for 65–72°F and 45–55% RH, away from exterior walls and direct light. Interior closets in conditioned spaces beat any garage, basement, or attic — temperature is the variable you can't out-engineer with a case alone.

Cases as modules, shelves as racks

Treat each case as a module — labeled, indexed, never stacked more than three high. A simple shelving system with consistent spacing makes audits fast and reduces accidental handling, which is the single largest source of avoidable wear.

The cadence of maintenance

Rotate humidity packs every 60 days. Audit the inventory quarterly. Photograph the collection annually. The cadence is the protection — without it, even the best system drifts.

Insurance, documentation, and the handoff

A documented collection is an insurable one. Keep a digital manifest with cert numbers, current values, and case locations — and store a copy off-site. The collection that survives a generational handoff is the one that arrives with its paperwork intact.
