What Makes a Protection System: Five Layers Every Collector Needs

Buying a hard case is not a protection system. It's the start of one.

The Five Layers

1. Contact protection. Foam-fitted wells or magnetic one-touches that prevent slab-on-slab and slab-on-cardboard contact. 2. Impact protection. Use a rigid hard shell with fitted interior support. 3. Environmental protection. Humidity packs, calibrated hygrometers, and a room kept between 65–72°F and 45–55% RH. 4. Security. Locked cases for travel; UL-rated safes or bank boxes for vault tier. 5. Documentation. Cert numbers, photos, purchase receipts, and an insurance schedule that reflects current values.

Why All Five

Any single layer is a vulnerability. A foam-fitted case in an attic still loses cards to humidity. A perfect vault with no documentation can't recover insurance after theft. A locked roller case with no foam still scratches its contents.

The collectors who never lose a card aren't lucky — they have all five layers running simultaneously.

Starting Where You Are

If you have multiple slabs, you need layers 1–3 today and layers 4–5 within a year. If you have 100, you need all five now. The [Protection Academy](/protection-academy) sequences these in order if you want a curriculum.
