Storing a 100+ Slab Collection: When You Outgrow Single Cases
The first hundred slabs fit in two cases. The next hundred requires a system.
The Inflection Point
At about multiple slabs, single travel cases stop being viable for your main collection. You need a tiered storage system: a working tier (recently acquired, frequently handled), a vault tier (long-term holds), and a display tier (rotation).
Working Tier
Foam-fitted hard cases sized to your dominant grader. Two to four cases live on a shelf at desk level. Add new acquisitions here and rotate to vault tier monthly.
Vault Tier
High-capacity slab drawers or stackable storage cases. Numbered slots cross-referenced to a spreadsheet:
| Slot | Cert # | Card | Grade | Value | Date Added |
Update the spreadsheet every time a card moves. The five minutes a week of bookkeeping saves hours during insurance updates.
Display Tier
Three to five cards in rotation, in UV-filtering display cases. Rotate quarterly back to vault.
Inventory Tools
Spreadsheet (Google Sheets, Airtable) for under 500 cards. Dedicated apps (Slab Sticker, CollX) for 500+ cards.
