Raw Card Storage Guide: Protect Ungraded Cards Like a Pro
Your raw cards deserve the same care as your graded slabs. Here's how to protect ungraded inventory before and after submission.
Why Raw Card Storage Matters
Not every card in your collection is graded — and many of your highest-value cards might still be raw, waiting for submission. A single scratch, corner ding, or humidity stain on a raw card can cost you multiple grade points and thousands in potential value.
The Protection Stack
Layer 1: Penny Sleeve Every raw card starts here. Use acid-free, crystal-clear penny sleeves. Avoid PVC sleeves — they off-gas chemicals that yellow cards over time.
Layer 2: Top Loader or Magnetic Holder For standard-value cards, semi-rigid top loaders provide excellent protection. For high-value cards ($100+), upgrade to magnetic one-touch holders with UV protection.
Layer 3: Storage Box Store sleeved and loaded cards upright in storage boxes sized for them. Never stack cards flat — the weight causes bowing and corner damage over time.
Grading Prep Tips
Before submitting to PSA, BGS, or SGC: Handle cards by edges only — wear cotton gloves for cards over $500 Use a microfiber cloth to gently remove surface dust Photograph front and back for your records Double-sleeve high-value submissions
Common Mistakes
Using old sleeves. Penny sleeves degrade over years. Replace them annually for valuable cards.
Rubber bands around top loaders. This is the fastest way to dent cards. Use team bags or storage boxes instead.
Storing in humid environments. Raw cards are more vulnerable to humidity than slabbed cards. Use humidity packs in your storage area.
