Pokémon Card Protection Guide: Sealed, Raw, and Graded

Pokémon is the toughest TCG to protect because the audience spans kids opening packs and investors holding six-figure inventory. Both deserve the same standards.

Sealed Product

Sealed Pokémon — booster boxes, ETBs, sealed packs — is the most fragile category. The cardboard shrink-wrap fails silently. Booster boxes warp in 70%+ humidity.

Store sealed at 45–55% RH, 65–72°F. Same range as slabs. Keep sealed in a poly bag with a Boveda 49% pack. Never store sealed on its side. Always flat or upright with support.

Raw Singles

Raw Pokémon singles intended for grading should live in a penny sleeve inside a semi-rigid holder (Card Saver 1) until they're submitted. Top loaders are fine for handling, but the squeeze action during insertion has graded cards down a grade more than any other handling step.

Graded Slabs

Graded Pokémon follows the same protection logic as graded sports: foam-fitted hard case, magnetic one-touch for grails, climate control. The only Pokémon-specific note is that the WOTC era (1999–2003) shadowless and 1st edition cards are particularly UV-sensitive — store completely out of light.

Display Without Damage

If you display, use UV-filtering acrylic and rotate cards quarterly. Even 10% UV transmission fades Pokémon ink visibly within a year.
