Magnetic One-Touch vs Screw-Down: Which Is Safer for Raw Cards?
Both holders look premium. Only one is actually safe for raw cards you plan to grade.
The Short Answer
Use magnetic one-touches for raw cards you might grade. Use screw-downs only for low-value display where you'll never remove the card.
Why One-Touches Win for Raw Cards
Magnetic one-touches close cleanly with no compression on the card surface. The card slides in, the magnet snaps, and the card sits in a recessed well with zero edge pressure. Removal is a single motion that doesn't flex the card.
Why Screw-Downs Are Dangerous
Screw-downs compress the card between two acrylic plates. Over months or years, screw-down pressure leaves a visible recessed outline — a "screw-down indent" — that grading companies dock for. PSA and BGS both identify screw-down damage and reflect it in the surface subgrade.
Sizing Matters
Buy one-touches sized to the card thickness: 35pt — standard modern issues 55pt — modern thick stock (Topps Chrome, Bowman Sterling) 75–100pt — Panini Prizm, thicker chase cards 130pt+ — patch cards, jersey cards
An oversized one-touch lets the card slide internally; that's how surface scratches happen.
